Rudolph R. Melzer Jr.

Champaign - Rudolph R. Melzer Jr., 85, passed away on Saturday October 22, 2016 at Heartland Healthcare Center in Champaign, IL. He was born on May 21, 1931 in Taylorville, IL to Rudolph and Maria (Hielscher) Melzer Sr. Rudolph married LaVerne Altman on December 28, 1952 in Taylorville, IL. Rudolph is survived by his wife; son Rudy (Donna) Melzer III; brother Monroe (Helen) Melzer; sisters Rudolphine Pranske and Betty Jane Waterman; and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and one sister. Rudolph was a 12 year veteran in the United States Air Force and he served during the Korean War. He was a member of Masonic Lodge 391 in Tolono for over 50 years. He enjoyed buying and selling cars and working as pit crew for drag racing. He loved riding motorcycles across the country with his wife. A memorial celebration of Rudolph's life will be held on Wednesday October 26, 2016 at 2pm at Sunset Funeral Home 710 N. Neil St. Champaign, IL 61820. Dorey Riegel will officiate. Memorial visitation will be held prior from 1-2pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Rudolph's name to the American Cancer Association or the American Lung Association.
