Royce Y. Greer, 93, formerly of Danville, passed away at 6:54a.m. Sunday, December 16, 2018 in Franklin, TN where he lived since February, 2012.
He was born Oct. 3, 1925, in Barron County, KY. Royce was one of 12 children born to Hennie Elizabeth (Key) Greer and Jack Gillock Greer. Royce married Charlotte (Kay) Quick on November 25, 1945 in Oakwood, Illinois.
He is survived by his two daughters Kathryn Germann (Randy) of Onaway, MI and Gina Cossey (Neil) of Franklin, TN.; grandsons, Beau Germann (Jodi) of Fort Myers, FL, Brett Germann (Misty) of Danville, IL, Lance Cossey (Tamra) of Birmingham, AL, Douglas Cossey (Kat) of Tampa, FL and Derek Cossey (Katie) of South Riding , VA; great-granddaughters, Ambria and Brooklynn Germann both of Danville, IL along with Scarlett and Arianna Cossey both of Birmingham, AL; sisters, Dorothy Poulson of Oakwood, IL and Charlotte Jones of Orlando, FL; sister-in-law, Delores Quick of Danville, IL; nephews, Larry Quick of Danville, IL and Terry (Cathy) Quick of Danville, IL. Along with many other loving family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife Charlotte; parents, Elizabeth and Jack; brothers, James Greer, William Greer, Emeral Greer, Claudis Greer, Levy Greer; sisters, Inez Wynn, Elma Wynn, Thelma Frye, Josephine Holdaway; brother-in-law, Gene Quick; sister-in-law, Kitty Montgomery.
Royce served his country proudly during WWII from 1944 to 1946 as an Army Small Arms Weapons Mechanic. He was experienced in rifle and submachine guns. He received the Army of Occupation Ribbon (Germany), Victory Medal American Theater Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with 1 Bronze Battle Star and 1 Overseas Service Bar.
Royce worked as an electronic tech for Allen Electric and Thomas Music shop in Danville before owning and operating an electronic repair business of his own until 1965. He played a major role in the planning, structure and implementation of Danville Community Antenna System Inc. in 1964 and Cable TV System. He served as Manager and Vice President for the company before retiring in 1978. During the early growth period he took on many tasks and wore many hats to see that the company would be successful. He could often be found in a bucket truck or perched on top of the 450 foot Cable tower working and eating lunch.
He played a major role in the initial organization of the Illinois/Indiana Cable TV Association as well as serving on the board of directors as Vice President and 2 terms as President.
He always enjoyed fishing, hunting (especially pheasant and morel mushrooms), tending to a very large vegetable garden, reading, playing cards (canasta), making homemade Christmas candy and decorations with his wife Kay. After retiring his hobbies became even more enjoyable when he could spend time creating memories with his family. Royce was loved and will be missed by his family and all that knew him!
He belonged to Hooton Church of Christ where he served as Deacon for several years before becoming a member at South Side Church of Christ in Danville.
A Celebration of Royce Greers Life has been scheduled for 11:00am, on December 22, 2018 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, located at 3920 N. Vermilion Street in Danville. Royces nephew, Pastor C.W. Greer and Pastor Kevin Ziegler will officiate his service. Visitation for family and friends will begin at 9:00am until time of the service on Saturday at the funeral home. He will be laid to rest following the service at Sunset Memorial Park with military honors by American Legion Post 210.
