Roy G. Burgoyne

Roy G. Burgoyne (80) of Georgetown, IL, went to be with the lord on Monday (July 16, 2012). He was surrounded by family at Carle Hospital, Urbana, Il. He was born April 23, 1932 to Philip James Burgoyne and Marie (Ramsey) Burgoyne of Georgetown, IL. Roy met his soul mate, Mary Lou (Winland) Burgoyne in H.S. at a Christian function. They were married Nov. 1st, 1953. She survives along with twin daughters; Darla "Dee" Marie Ardis (Peoria) & Karla (Ron) Howard (Georgetown), 3 grandchildren; Philip Sporcich (Oakwood), Brock and Cydney Ardis (Peoria) and 2 step grandchildren; Jennifer (Hector) Pulgar (Chile) & Mandy (Jon) Wagner (Marion, IL). Roy attended the University of Illinois and was drafted in the U.S. Navy as a petty officer and served aboard the USS Gherardi from 1952-1954. He faithfully attended the Ship reunions the past 15 years serving as Co-President and then Secretary. He treasured his relationships with his fellow crewmen. Roy joined his grandfather, Roy Lake "PoP" Burgoyne, and parents, "Phil" & Marie Burgoyne, in the family business, "Burgoyne's Flowers Shop & Greenhouses," which was established in 1909. Roy and Mary Lou worked side by side in the business for nearly 60 years. Roy's other passions were demonstrated by his commitment to community service; President-JayCees President-Georgetown School board 30 years - Vermilion County Historical Society Board 32nd degree Mason Member of the First Church of Christ Member of American Legion Dornblaser Post 203 After his retirement in 2005, Roy and Mary Lou enjoyed attending their grandchildren's school and sporting events and taking them four wheeling at the family farm. He took pride in sharing his often "purposeful" thoughts and guidance in their growing years which inspired them to be hard workers and be involved in their community. Roy was a HUGE Illini Fan, he bled orange and blue, much to the annoyance of his many Hoosier neighbors. If you even engaged in conversation with Roy, you would remember his blue eyes, cheerfulness, thoughtful and warm conversations. A celebration of Roy's life will be held at 10:00am, Friday, July 20, 2012, at Sunset's Houghton-Leasure Funeral Home, Georgetown. Visitation will be 4-8pm, Thursday, July 19, 2012, at the funeral home. He will be laid to rest in Georgetown Cemetery. Memorial donations may be given in his name to: The Vermilion County Historical Society or the American Cancer Society.
