Roy E. Johnston, 69, of Danville, IL formerly of Indianola, passed away on Thursday, September 20, 2018 at Hawthorne Inn in Danville. He fought a courageous battle with multiple myeloma. He was born on March 24, 1949 in Christopher, IL the son of Jessie L. and Myra D. (Silkwood) Johnston. Roy married Jo Anne Miller on August 31, 1968 at the Jamaica Methodist Church in Jamaica, IL. He is survived by his wife, Jo Anne Johnston of Danville, IL; daughters, Michelle L. Lawhorn of Tilton, IL, and Becki R. Wissel of Pekin, IL; brother, Gary (Patricia) Johnston of Avon, IN; four grandchildren, Nick, Heather, Madeline, and Logan; one great grandson, Jordan; 14 brothers and sisters in law; 16 nieces and nephews; and 16 great nieces and nephews. Preceding Roy in death include both of his parents; brother in law, Bill Miller; and nephew, Brian Spicer. Roy served in the United States Army for 2 years in the 3rd Armored Division and was overseas in Germany for 1 year. He was employed at the VA Hospital for 30 years as well as farmed part time with his brother in law, Bill Miller, for 15 years. One of his favorite pastimes was playing ping pong with the Indianola Boys Club. He loved being outdoors gardening and mowing and listening to country music. In his opinion the only real baseball team was the St. Louis Cardinals. A Graveside Service will be held at 11 AM on Friday, September 28, 2018 at the Danville National Cemetery. Officiating will be Pastor Aaron Rohde and Pastor Craig Roller. Military Rites will be performed by the Catlin American Legion. Visitation will be held the evening prior on Thursday, September 27th from 4 to 7 PM at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 3940 N. Vermilion St. in Danville. Memorial donations may be made to the Danville Cancer Center or a charity of the donor's choice.
