Rolland 'Arch' Goin

Rolland "Arch" Goin (77) of Danville, IL passed away at 1:09 p.m., September 5, 2016 at Methodist Health Indiana Hospital in Indianapolis, IN, after his long and courageous battle with cancer. Rolland Archie Goin was born December 17, 1938 in Watseka, IL, the son of Mildred (Strong) Goin and Archie O. Goin. He grew up in Rankin, IL, graduated from Rankin High School and maintained close ties to the Rankin and Cissna Park area. His long and rewarding career in the construction business began with Maddox Construction of Rankin, IL building golf courses, and continued with White Construction of Clinton, IN, supervising the construction of numerous wind projects throughout the country and Canada. In 2006, he left his "mark" in Oklahoma, where they paid tribute by naming a permanent road "Arch Goin Super Hwy". When his granddaughter asked, "Papa, is that for real?", he humbly replied, "Yes, it's on the blueprints." When he finished the wind turbine project in West Virginia in 2009, the president of the International Union of Operating Engineers in Charleston wrote, "Arch has been in the seat and knows what a machine will do and what it won't do", and further praised him as an exceptional Superintendent who respected his workers. Arch was a 50-year member of Local 150 and received recognition for his broad knowledge, fairness, and supervisory skills. Arch enjoyed the challenges of construction supervision; but, sadly, failing health forced his retirement at age 75. Rolland and his wife; Patricia, ("Trish", he called her) traveled extensively with their motor home that bought him contentment and so many experiences. He truly appreciated the outdoors and could spend hours at his farm, simply checking the beans and corn or sorting tools in the barn. He took pride in his 1933 Ford truck. Rolland was a member/pilot of the University of Illinois Glider Club and flew his privately-owned glider for 16 years. He carried his violins with him and joined in "jamming" at Blue Grass festivals throughout the country. When the snow started flying, and he heard the calling of Blue Grass music, he and "Trish" packed their RV and headed for winters in Florida, Texas or Arizona. He was a proud "Papa" to his grandkids and strongly encouraged and supported their continued education. Surviving are his wife, Patricia "Pat" (Pickering) Goin; sons, Gregory Goin and Jeffrey (Debbie) Goin; granddaughters, Nickie Goin and Jessica Shutes; grandsons, Kelly (Samantha) Goin and Josh Goin; great-granddaughter, Kylie Howe; great-grandsons, Sawyer and Bentley Goin, Cameron Colunga and Jameson Shutes. Also surviving are brothers, Randy (Martha) Goin and Bob (Sheila) Cleary; sisters, Sue (Larry) Hofer and Bette (Kevin) Brennan; a very dear aunt, Hazel Kirchhoefer; sisters-in-law, Carol Goin, Barbara Stewart, Sue Pickering and Margaret (George) Scarlett; brothers-in-law, Charles (Gladys) Pickering and John "Jack" (Sherry) Pickering; several nieces and nephews and special friends, Ray Horton, Robert Ingram, Brian Roberts, and Rick Butler (of Canada). Rolland was preceded in death by his father and mother, a loving and special stepfather, Robert "Bob" Cleary; Grandpa and Grandma Strong, who he adored, and who helped mold his young life as he spent his early years on their farm in Cissna Park; brother, Don Goin; a very dear aunt, Helen Strong; father and mother-in-law Frank and Anna Pickering; sister-in-law Helen Green; brothers-in-law Shelby Green, Bob Pickering, Mike Pickering and Jack Stewart. Memorial donations may be made to First Church of the Nazarene, 2212 North Vermilion Street, Danville, IL 61832. A celebration of Rolland's life will begin at 3:00 p.m., Friday, September 9, 2016 at First Church of the Nazarene, 2212 North Vermilion Street, Danville, IL with the Rev. Dave Anderson officiating. Burial will take place at Sunset Memorial Park. Visitation will be held 1-3 p.m., prior to the services at the church.
