Danville- Roger Schackmann, 63, of Danville passed away at 3:08AM on Tuesday, November 12, 2013 at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana. He was born on January 17, 1950 in Danville to Walter and Mary Jane Waclaw Schackmann. He married Mary Snyder on August 25, 1980 in Las Vegas Nevada. She survives. Also surviving are a son, Christopher (Jenna Harbaugh) Schackmann of San Diego, CA; a brother, Steve Schackmann of Vernon Hills, IL; and a sister Ann Kuntz of Danville. He was preceded in death by a son, Aaron Schackmann and his parents. Roger was an interesting man who enjoyed life to the fullest. His experiences lead him around the world, including the U.S., South America, and Europe and included time spent petting alligators and a particularly precarious small engine plane landing in the French Alps. His widened world view was also a result of the time he spent in the Army in Germany. Roger certainly didnt need to travel across the globe to gather story materials, he could find adventure anywhere. Whether a simple trip to the grocery store or visiting his son at school, he could always find an adventure in his experiences and tell an epic story. Roger will also be remembered as a person whose amiable personality allowed him to make a friend anywhere he went. His time was often well spent hunting and antiquing with his good friend, Bob Nelson. Roger and Bob could many times be found combing flea markets or rummage sales for a deal on a one of a kind item. He also enjoyed gardening and making hot sauce and anything to do with nature. The family also would like to thank Brenda Miller and Rogers work family at AT&T, as well as his golf buddies and the other many important friends in his life for their compassion and support during these difficult times. A service to celebrate the life of Roger Schackmann will be held at 10 AM on Saturday, November 16, 2013 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, A Life Celebration Home in Danville. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery. Father Greg Nelson will officiate. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 PM on Friday, November 15, also at Sunset in Danville. Memorials in Rogers name may be made to the Vermilion County Conservation District. Please join Rogers family in sharing memories, photos, and video of his life through his tribute wall at www.sunsetfuneralhome.com.
