Danville- Roger Lawrence Hankins, 81, of Danville, passed away at 11:35 PM Saturday, December 6, 2014 surrounded by his family. He was born on June 4, 1933 in Lafayette, IN, the son of Guy and Evelyn (Relander) Hankins. On July 2, 1960 Roger married Peggy Snyder in Lafayette, IN. Roger and Peggy resided in Danville. She was the love of his life. Peggy preceded him in death on April 3, 2013. Also preceding him in death is his daughter, Julianne Hankins, parents and sister, Helen Hudson. Roger is survived by his son, Todd (Marti) Hankins of Fairmount, grandsons; Mike (Missy) VanCamp, Chad (Brandi) VanCamp, Tony (Britney) VanCamp, grandchildren; Haleigh, Hope, Hannah VanCamp, Haley See, Alexis VanCamp, Faith, AJ and Kami VanCamp. Roger retired from Carle Hospital in Urbana after working several years at Interstate Printing and General Electric. He served in the Korean War as a member of the United States Air Force. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed building remote control planes. He loved spending time with family and friends. He was a beloved father and grandfather and will be deeply missed by his family and friends. He will be remembered as a gentle man who was kind to everyone he encountered. The family would like to give a special thank you to his caregivers, Carle Hospice, and all the special doctors and nurses at the Danville VA Palliative Care. As per Rogers wishes there will be a private graveside service at Sunset Memorial Park in Danville with military honors being performed by the Danville American Legion Post #210. Memorials can be made in Rogers name to the Vermilion County Animal Shelter 14755 Catlin/Tilton Road, Tilton IL, 61834. Roger loved animals and sincerely cared about their well being.
