Roger C. Meyers

Roger C. Meyers age 77, passed away peacefully on August 30, 2010. Roger was born in Dubuque, Iowa on August 5, 1933 to Anthony and Margaret Meyers. He married Sally Risser on August 4, 1956 at St. Francis de Sales Church in Keokuk, Iowa. He graduated from Keokuk Senior High School, served as a medic in the Air Force during Korean War, and went on to complete his education under the GI Bill. Roger went to work in data processing for Hoerner Boxes in 1960 and survived numerous mergers as controller for Hoerner Waldorf and Champion International before moving to Danville, Illinois in 1980 as General Manager for Stone Container. He was awarded the Chairmans Award for Excellence in 1998, and retired from that position under Smurfit-Stone in 2000. He was a member of St. Pauls Catholic Church. He has been a volunteer and board member for Habitat for Humanity, a past member of the Danville Country Club and the Timid Ten golf group, a member of the Danville Planning and Zoning Commission, and an AARP income tax volunteer. Roger is survived by his wife of 54 years, Sally, and their five daughters: Tari Heger of Magnolia, Texas, Tami (Mike) Genin of Springfield, Illinois, Tina (Jim) Ziegler of Staples, Minnesota, Trish (Jeff) Huffman of Monticello, Illinois, and Tracy (Jim) Gonsalves of Park City, Utah; eleven grandchildren: Jacob Heger, Michael & Sarah Genin, Jennifer, Elizabeth, James, Katherine & Kimberly Ziegler, Jessica & Samantha Huffman, and Carrloyn Gonsalves; and three great-grandchildren. A Celebration Mass will be at 10:00 am, Thursday, September 2, 2010 at St. Pauls Catholic Church. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm Wednesday evening at Sunset Funeral Home & Cremation Center, a Life Celebration Home 3940 N. Vermilion St. Danville, IL. Following the service, he will be laid to rest at Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk, Iowa with full military Honors. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to either St. Pauls Church in Danville, IL, or to the National Kidney Foundation (as Roger received a transplant from his daughter Tari in 1990).
