If you had the privilege of meeting Rockey, you would have found that he was friendly and easy to talk to. He made friends easily and many people became his lifelong friend. He was a kind soul and was always willing to give a helping hand if needed. He was loved and respected by many. He made an impression on everyone he met. Some of Rockys favorite thing to do included fishing, camping, hiking; especially at Turkey Run, gardening, and just being outdoors. He also enjoyed traveling and seeing new places. He lived most of his life in Danville, but he lived in the Daytona Beach area for eight years. He loved the ocean and beaches. Rockey was an avid reader, and his favorite author was John Grisham. Music was a big part of Rockeys life, he attended many concerts. Some of his favorite artists were Aerosmith and Janis Joplin. He loved to watch Charlie Brown, which was his favorite cartoon character. Grilling and smoking meats was his specialty. His favorite food was smoked brisket. Most of all Rockey loved spending time with his family, especially his grandbabies.
Throughout his life, Rockey had many jobs. You could say he was "a Jack of all trades and a master of none." His first job was at Skellys Truck Stop, later taking a job at Mr. Quicks, where he met another lifelong friend, Dale Brandenburg Sr. He was a carhop at Steak N Shake on Main St. and worked at Owens gas stations before enlisting in the army. He also worked at Peterson Puritan and was a CNA at the Danville VA. In Florida he learned many construction jobs including pest control, roofing, landscaping, and lawn care. Rockey helped lay the electric groundwork for the first lights at the Daytona International Speedway. After moving back to Danville, he stayed in Green Tech Lawncare where he made another lifelong friend, Pete Swinson. Later he worked at Berrys Garden Center doing irrigation which he called "irritation." In the winters he offset his income by working at H&R Block. All of this experience lead up to Rockey owning his own company. Rockeys Lawn Care, which he retired from in 2016.
The family of Rockey would like to give a special thank you to the Carle Hospice team for the wonderful care they gave Rockey, especially nurses Marge and Tanya.
