Robert 'Smokey' Smothers

Robert J. Smokey Smothers, 79, of Danville, died at 9:40 p.m. on Wednesday, April 11, 2007, at VA Illiana Health Care System. Robert was born August 27, 1927, in San Antonio, Texas, the son of Rayburn and Viola (Aycock) Smothers. He married June M. Newell on Oct 4, 1947. Robert is survived by his wife; one son, Casey (Beth) Smothers of Danville, IL; and one daughter, Sharon (Richard) Knight of Danville, IL; three grandchildren, Andrew Chase Smothers of Kingsport, TN, Cameron Scott Smothers of Kingsport, TN, and Aaron Robert Smothers of Danville, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Myrtle Newell and one brother, John Smothers. Robert served in the United States Army during WWII. He worked as a heavy equipment operator at the VA Hospital for over 29 years. He enjoyed his yard, gardening, and music. Robert was very active in the American Federation of Government Employees Union serving as a Chief Union Steward. Robert loved his grandkids. A Memorial Service for Robert will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, April 15, 2007, at Farmers Chapel with Pastor Glen Huffman officiating. Burial will be at Danville National Cemetery.
