Robert L. Young

Robert L. Young, 92, of Oakwood passed away at 6:35 AM on October 24, 2025 at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, IL.

Robert was born on January 10, 1933 the son of Peter and Bertha (Taylor) Young in Danville, IL. He married Sandra Tatar on June 20, 1959 and she preceded him in death on January 26, 2010.

Survivors include his sons, Ron (Melanie) Young of Fishers, IN and David (Connie) Young of Oakwood, IL, grandchildren, Ashley (Devon) Dorsey of Lapel, IN, Daniel Young of Seattle, WA, Katelyn (Jayden Cox) Young of Murray, KY, Joshua Young of Oakwood, IL and Nathan Young of Oakwood, IL, as well as one brother, Ben (Sue) Young of Danville, IL and special friend, Janice Lane of Danville.

Robert is preceded in death by his parents, wife, Sandra Young and one brother and sister-in-law, Carl and Jerry Young.

Robert was a longtime member of Muncie Baptist Church. He was a very active member holding numerous positions within the church. He enjoyed all things aviation to include being a private pilot; building and restoring many different aircraft and being a member and supporter of the Experimental Aircraft Association, regularly attending the annual fly-in convention with his family and friends. Robert worked at Chanute Air Force Base as a Structural Airframe Technician for over 30 years and was considered a master of his craft. After retirement, he started his own business doing aircraft structural work, working on mostly WWII aircraft. He built his own homebuilt aircraft in his basement, as well as restoring several other airplanes over the years. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend. His family was the most important thing to him next to the Lord.

Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 PM on Wednesday, October 29, 2025 at the Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 3940 N Vermilion St. Danville, Illinois 61834. A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:30 AM on Thursday, October 30, 2025, at Muncie Baptist Church, 205 Main Street in Muncie, Illinois, 61857. Pastor Todd Creason will officiate. Burial will be held at Oakwood Cemetery.
