CHAMPAIGN - Robert Gold, 93, of Champaign, passed away at 9:00 PM on Thursday, May 28, 2015 at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana. Bob was born October 30, 1921 in Waukegan, Illinois, the son of Samuel and Anna Beilin Gold. He married Rita Swanson Neal in 1956 in Hoopeston, Illinois. She survives. Other survivors include: one stepson, Steven (Christel) Neal of Flower Mound, Texas; one daughter, Karen (James) Cottrell of Champaign; and two grandchildren, Emma and Eva Cottrell, both of Champaign. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; and one sister. Bob served in the U.S. Navy during WWII from 1942 to 1945 in the south pacific on the U.S.S. Mugford, a destroyer. He then graduated from the University of Illinois in 1950, and began his career with the Hoopeston Chronicle Herald. He worked for the Champaign-Urbana Courier for 21 years and retired from the University of Illinois News Bureau. Along with his wife, Bob owned and operated Gold's Bed and Breakfast. Bob was a long time antique dealer, an avid Chicago Cubs fan, and a lover of the great outdoors. He is surely trout fishing in a mountain stream right now. As per his wishes, cremation has been entrusted to the care of Sunset Funeral Home, Champaign-Urbana Chapel, 710 N. Neil St. in Champaign. A graveside committal service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday June 5th at Danville National Cemetery in Danville, Illinois. Military honors will be presented by the Danville American Legion Post 210.
