Cayuga, Ind.- Robert "Bob" Moore DeVerter, 82, of Cayuga and a resident of Bickford Memory Care in Crawfordsville, Indiana passed away peacefully with family by his side at 9 A.M., April 14, 2023, at Franciscan Health Hospital in Crawfordsville, Indiana.

He was born February 1, 1941, in Chicago, Illinois, the son of the late Wilmont and Florence E. (Moore) DeVerter.

Robert married Carol A. Bernardi on June 22, 1962, in Paris, Illinois, she survives.

Other survivors include his children: Todd (Laura) DeVerter of Anniston, Alabama, Connie (Dennis) Chew of Cayuga, Indiana, and Robin (Jeff) Hegg of Covington, Indiana; Five grandchildren: Trebor DeVerter of Jacksonville, Florida, Courtney DeVerter of Salisbury, North Carolina, Hannah (Chad) Belser of Cayuga, Indiana, Kaila (Eric) Mosshammer of North Baltimore, Ohio, and Gage Hegg of Covington, Indiana; Two great grand-sons: Bowen and Dawson Belser of Cayuga, Indiana.

Robert was preceded in death by his twin granddaughters, brother, Malcolm DeVerter, and nephew, John DeVerter. Along with his pets, Cowcat and Lady, his rescued Doberman, whom he loved dearly.

Robert was a 1959 graduate of Cayuga High School and 1961 graduate of the Indiana College of Mortuary Science. In 1960, Robert began his funeral director career at Conkle Funeral Home in Speedway, Indiana. While employed at Conkle Funeral Home, Robert assisted in running the ambulance service at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He had the duty of being the primary first responder stationed at the exit of pit road. This began his love for IndyCar racing. In May 1974, he purchased the former Hegg Funeral Home in Covington, Indiana. In the spring of 1981, Robert went into the funeral business with his brother Malcom in Cayuga, Indiana. This changed the name of the funeral home from Malcolm DeVerter Funeral Home to DeVerter Brothers Funeral Home. Robert served the local communities as a funeral director for approximately 46 years. Robert was extremely active in his community and some of his memberships include the Cayuga Presbyterian Church, Perrysville Unity Lodge #344 (Lifetime), 50 plus year member of the Masons, Shriner International, former member of the Royal Order of Jesters (Past Director in 2010) Terre Haute Court #45. He was a former Director of First Financial Bank, Cayuga Branch and President of the Holding Company for the current North Vermillion Elementary School.

Robert enjoyed going to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway during the month of May, NASCAR, restoring furniture, working in his yard, fishing, cleaning and detailing his cars, and taking trips to St. John, USVI. He loved driving his 1996 Silver Anniversary Corvette that took him and his wife, Carol, on their Route 66 trip in 2007 that tested their marriage. He enjoyed spending time with family and his many friends.

The family would like to say "Thank You" to Franciscan Health Hospital in Crawfordsville and the ICU and Med/Surg Departments for their kindness. Also, many, many thanks to Care Hospice and the BFMs at Bickford Memory Care in Crawfordsville. You were part of his family these past four years.

Graveside service for family and friends will be held Tuesday, April 18th, 2023, at 2:00 P.M. CST (Illinois Time) at Stearns Cemetery in rural Muncie, Illinois with Pastor Ramona Trover officiating. Visitation: Monday, April 17th, 2023, at 4-7 P.M. EST (Indiana Time) at Sunset Funeral Home DeVerter Chapel in Cayuga, Indiana. Masonic memorial services will be held at 7 P.M.
