Danville - Robert C. "Chan" Mathews, III, 88, of Danville, IL passed ways at 10:10 AM on May 2, 2021 at Colonial Manor in Danville, IL.
Chan was born on October 6, 1932 in Atlanta, GA the son of Robert C. Mathews, Jr., and Tallulah (Lemmond) Mathews. He married Joan Marie Woyner on January 30, 1960 in Upper Darby, PA and she survives.
Survivors include his wife, Joan Mathews of Danville, IL, four daughters, Nancy Mathews of Danville, IL, Susan (Doug) Hance of Urbana, IL, Diane (Peter) Whitlaw of Lombard, IL, and Carolyn Donzelli of Colorado, as well as five grandchildren, Allan, Emily, Chloe, Peter, Michael and four great grandchildren, Brayden, Annmarie, Camden and Miles.
Chan is preceded in death by his parents.
Chan graduated from Emory University in Georgia (still undefeated in football!) in 1953 with a BBA degree. He was a member of the Sigma Pi fraternity. He joined General Electric Co.s Accounting Department in Atlanta in 1954, and remained with that company, except for a two-year stint in the United States Air Force, until 1987, when Danvilles GE business was sold to Valmont Industries. He retired from full-time employment at Valmont in 1991 but did consulting work on a part-time basis for several more years.
Chan had many interests including travel, computerizing, reading, exercising, collecting opera and classical music recordings, and watching sports. He was a longtime fan of the Philadelphia Phillies.
A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at a later date. Inurnment will be in the Living Waters Wall at Sunset Memorial Park. Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center 3940 N Vermilion St., Danville, Illinois 61834 is assisting the family with arrangements.
