Rita Ann Shuck, 83, of Grand Island, Nebraska, formerly of Danville, died February 27, 2016 at Mary Lanning Healthcare in Hastings, Nebraska. She was born on August 2, 1932 to Merle and Dorothy (Hilligoss) Tomlinson in Danville. Rita graduated from Danville High School in 1950. She married Gayle Shuck on April 13, 1952. They had two children, David Randall "Randy" and Susan, and enjoyed 52 happy years of marriage before Gayle's death in 2004. As a young mother and homemaker, Rita was active in her children's school activities and the PTA. Later she worked as the cafeteria manager at Danville High School for many years. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Danville. After Rita's husband passed, Rita moved to Texarkana, Texas to be closer to her daughter Susan. In 2013, the family relocated to Grand Island, Nebraska. Rita enjoyed reading, tending to her houseplants, going out to eat, and watching the squirrels and birds in her yard. At one point, Rita had a squirrel in her yard that would eat peanut butter crackers right out of her hand. Rita also loved Old English Sheepdogs and owned several throughout her life. Most especially, Rita enjoyed spending time with her great-grandchildren. Rita will be missed for many reasons, but her generosity and her unique sense of humor are the qualities that will be remembered most fondly. She is survived by her daughter, Susan (Patrick) Igo of Grand Island with whom she made her home; three granddaughters, Heather (Derek) Lantry of Chicago, Jessica Igo (Jon Jefferies) of Grand Island, and Kimberly Clayton Bledsoe of Arkansas; and six great-grandchildren, Cuyler, Nora, Bridget, and Carys Lantry of Chicago, and Gayle Clayton and Vivian Jefferies of Grand Island. Rita was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Randy; and her husband, Gayle. Services will be Saturday, March 5 at Sunset Funeral Home. Visitation will begin at 12 p.m. and the funeral will immediately follow at 2 p.m. The Reverend Zach LeCrone will officiate. Rita will be laid to rest in Springhill Cemetery next to her husband and son. Please join her family in sharing memories, photos, & videos through her tribute wall at www.sunsetfuneralhome.com.
