Cayuga, Ind. -- Rick Backlund, 61, of Cayuga, passed away at 4 p.m. EDT Tuesday, April 7, 2009 at West Central Community Hospital in Clinton, Indiana. Rick was born October 3, 1947 in Pensacola, Florida the son of Eldon Lee and Kathryn "Kaye" Zimmerman Backlund. He is survived by two daughters, Ronda(Steve)Kovacik of Highland, Indiana and Shaley Weir of Cayuga, Indiana; one son, Rob Backlund of Lansing, Illinois; his mother, Kaye Smith of Highland, Indiana; Fiance, Stacy Criblez and her daughter Rianna both of Georgetown, Illinois; one sister, Molly Schneider of Demotte, Indiana. He was preceded in death by his father, Eldon Lee Backlund. Rick was a self employed truck driver. He was a Vietnam War Veteran serving with the United States Navy. His memberships included the Cayuga American Legion Post #263 and H.O.G. He attended the Elwood Friends Church in Georgetown, Illinois. Rick enjoyed riding his harley, off roading, 4 wheeling, NASCAR, hunting, mushrooming, gardening and cutting firewood. Rick especially enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. A gathering of family and friends will be Saturday, April 11, 2009 from 2 to 5 p.m. EDT at the Cayuga American Legion, 904 West Ferry Street, Cayuga, Indiana 47928. Burial of cremains will be held at a later date. DeVerter Funeral Home in Cayuga, Indiana is assisting the family with arrangements.
