Danville native, Richard F. Smitty Smith, 77, passed away at 1:01 am on Sunday, June 26, 2011 at his home in Danville. He was born on July 26, 1933, in Danville, the son of Floyd C. and Helen E. Smith. Both preceded him in death. He is survived by his long time friend who always was there when needed, Keith (Jane) Stark of Danville. In addition to his parents; his two brothers; Robert J, and Geo R. Smith preceded Richard in death. Smitty was a lifetime resident of the Danville Community, graduating from Edison Grade School, Danville High School, Danville Area Community College, and the University of Miami, Coral Gable Florida in 1955. He was also a life time member of Sigma and Alpha Epsilon Fraternity, past member of the Danville Elks Lodge 332, member of St. James United Methodist Church, and past member of the Danville American Legion Post #210. He served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict, stationed in San Diego California for two years. He enjoyed baseball, football, and golf games along with his hobbies of collecting antiques, guns, knives, and buying and selling at auctions and flea markets. Smitty also enjoyed some 52 years of his life working in the automobile business with Barkman Chevrolet, and Julian Yudin Nissan Travel Trailers. His final 22 years of his career was working for Bob and Marion Smith, two very close friends and owners of Bill Smith Auto Parts. A Celebration of Richard Smitty Smiths Life will begin at 11:00am on Wednesday, June 29, 2011 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, A Life Celebration Home, located at 3940 N. Vermilion Street in Danville. Burial will take place at Spring Hill Cemetery with military honors. Visitation will be from 9am until time of service on Wednesday, June 29, 2011 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Smittys name to the St. James United Methodist Church and/or the American Heart Association.
