Richard S. Carlton, 88, of Danville, passed away at 7:15 PM on Sunday, April 15, 2012 at VA Iliana Healthcare System in Danville. Richard was born on June 10th, 1923, in Columbus, Ohio, the son of Harry Easter and Helen (Stahr) Carlton-Kercheval. He married Mary Bunker on September 4th, 1949, in Marion, Indiana. She preceded him in death on October 19th, 1990. He is survived by two daughters- Candace (James) Elder of Divernon, Illinois and Karen (Mark) Kracht of Danville; one brother- David W. (Marcella) Carlton of Bonita Springs, Florida; two granddaughters- Kristy (Mjr. Charles) Cain of Edwards, California and Lindsey (Clint) Hangebrauck of Carmel, Indiana; and four great-grandchildren- Lauren Cain, Sarah Cain, Savannah Hangebrauck and Connor Hangebrauck. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife. Richard graduated in 1942 from Anderson High School, in Anderson, Indiana. After high school, he enlisted in the United States Marines serving from 1942 to 1946, participating in action in the Pacific Islands during WWII, in Guam, Marianas Islands, Guadalcanal Okinawa and Ryukyu Islands. Richard graduated from the University of New Mexico in 1950 with a B.A. in journalism. He was a member of Sigma Delta Chi while in college. Richard started golfing at 12 and never stopped, it was one of his greatest enjoyments. Everyone who knew him referred to him as Grandfather. Richard held a variety of supervisory and management positions in housing, country clubs, apartments and boat clubs. He became the resident manager at Halfmoon Village Apartments in St. Louis Missouri in 1978 where he worked until retiring in 2005. A Celebration of Richard's Life will be held on Friday, April 20, 2012 at 5:00 PM at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, A Life Celebration Home in Danville with Fr. Greg Nelson officiating. A visitation will be held from 3:00-5:00 PM Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be at I.O.O.F Cemetery in Marion, IN. Memorials can be made in Richard's name to the Palliative Care Unit at VA Iliana Healthcare System in Danville or the American Alzheimer's Association.
