Danville- Richard L. Smith, 68, of Potomac died at 8:40 PM on Thursday, September 29, 2011 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born on September 7, 1943 in Danville to Floyd William and Alice Ruth Middleton Smith. He married Janice K. Wernigk on March 9, 1974 in Potomac. She survives. Also surviving are two sons, Chris Smith of Murfreesboro, TN and Richard "Rick" (Angela Browning) Smith of Potomac; three daughters Lisa K. (David) Makemson of Danville, Niki (Kevin) George of DuQuoin, and Tiffany Smith of Potomac; three brothers Dennis (Marla) Smith, Daryl (Vickie) Smith, and Jerry (Cathy) Smith; grandchildren Christopher, Rachel, and Brittney Smith, Jordan, Brandon, and Megan Smith, Tommy Carrico, Ashley Browning, Amber, Brittany, Jessica, Devin, David, and Sophia Makemson, Ashlee and Devin Austill, Jesse (Chelsea) Smith; two great-grandchildren, Kysen Smith and Austin Fawbush; and special friends Tina Brewer, Chris and Keli Camarata, Chris and Sarah Showalter, and Donnie Hosler. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Tamber L. Smith, and two grandsons, Johnathon and Benjamin Makemson. Richard served in the United States Army and retired from Walmart in Rantoul after 18 years. He enjoyed fishing, painting ceramics, hunting, and camping with his family. Richard also coached little league and softball. He loved to spend time with his family, and never met a stranger. A service to celebrate the life of Richard Smith will be held at 10 AM on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, A Life Celebration Home in Danville. Pastor Miles Clark will officiate. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park. Visitation will be held from 4-8 PM on Monday, October 3, also at Sunset in Danville. Memorials may be made to the family, the American Lung Association, or Provena Hospice.
