Richard Henry Huckstadt (Dick), 95, of Danville, passed away peacefully at 3:41 pm Sunday, July 3, 2022, in the same home in which he was born.
Richard was born in Danville, Illinois on September 1, 1926, the son of Henry and Esther Huckstadt. His love of life, cheerful attitude, sense of humor, work ethic, and precision left an impact on many.
Richard married Mary Lou (Miller) Huckstadt in 1952 and they celebrated 66 years of marriage prior to her death. Richard is survived by his children, Scott (Eileen) Huckstadt, Mark (Patty) Huckstadt, Susan (Rick) Willmert; grandchildren, Nathan (Niki) Huckstadt, Andy (Sadie) Huckstadt, Jennifer (Kennon) Senter, Nikki (Andy)McLain, Kyle (Brandy) Huckstadt; great-grandchildren, Lydia, Amelia, Ava, Tyson, Caleb, Marlow, Keagan, and Henley; nieces and nephews Terry Jahnke, Rita Hamrick, Kenneth Lester, Loretta Minnis; many cousins, church family, the Tanner family, and his close weekly coffee buddies.
Richard is preceded in death by his wife, parents, sister Catherine, and niece Lorraine.
Richard was a graduate of Danville High School class of 1944.
He enlisted in the Navy Seabees in 1944 where he got his "can do" attitude and served in WW II in Okinawa. He was honorably discharged in 1946. He was honored to experience the Central Illinois Honor Flight in 2012 in recognition of his service.
He was a skilled carpenter with the C&EI Railroad for several years before and after the service. His career also included being a union carpenter, and responsible for facilities and maintenance at St. Elizabeth Hospital from which he retired.
Volunteerism was a lifelong priority for him: as a lifelong member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, he served as captain of his ushering team; Immanuel Lutheran School Troop 1 Scout Master; Honor Guard for many years with the American Legion Post 210; and serving with Golden Kiwanis and VFW.
His enthusiasm and support for family and friends, gardening, building projects, and doing puzzles allowed him to connect deeply with people. Richards loyalty, kindness and integrity will be missed.
