Danville - Richard E. Cates, 72, passed away peacefully on January 1, 2015 at Hawthorne Inn Nursing Home in Danville, IL. Richard was born the son of Earl and Dorothy Cates on October 8, 1942 in Michigan City, IN. Richard is survived by his siblings Virginia (Dale) Behrens of Royal and James Cates of Lawrenceville; his nieces and nephews John E. (Lisa) Behrens of Danville, Kristi (William) Davis of Royal, Chad (Megan) Cates of Terre Haute, Lindsay (Tyler) Brock of Terre Haute, Austin Cates of Lawrenceville, and Rayce Cates of Lawrenceville. He is preceded in death by his parents Earl and Dorothy Cates. Richard had a strong and dedicated work ethic, he was a night watchman for over 30 years at Steel Grip. Richard was a proud past member of the Moose Lodge in Danville. He loved all kinds of sports but was very fond of bowling. Richard was a huge fan of the San Francisco Giants and especially Willie Mays. A celebration of life will be held on Tuesday January 6, 2015 at 10 a.m., at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, a life celebration home in Danville. Pastor Ed Stone will officiate; burial will follow at Spring Hill Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Monday January 5, 2015 from 5 pm to 7 pm also at Sunset Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family ask that you donate to the American Cancer Society in Richards name.
