Richard 'Dick' Long

Richard "Dick" Allen Long, 91, of Danville went to be with The Lord on Friday, January 6, 2023 at 4:12 pm. Dick was born September 28, 1931 to Charles Allen Long and Stella Mae (Cundiff) Long. He graduated from Danville High School in 1949 and married Helen Irene "Snooks" Morgan on September 2, 1950; she preceded him in death on September 19, 2022. He is also preceded in death by his parents, a sister Phyllis Joanne Wolfe, and brother Michael Long.

After he married Irene, Dick went into the United States Air Force from 1950 until his discharge in 1955. During that time, he served as an Airman Second Class in the Korean War conflict. He was an electrician in the 3320th Installation Squadron ATRO. He worked several jobs upon his discharge from the Air Force, but for most of his life he worked as a warehouse foreman at Edward Hines Lumber Co., and then at Danville Cash & Carry, which later became Kirschner Lumber. For a short time, he was a bartender for his father-in-law at the Friendly Tavern. He retired from Kirschner Lumber in 1991. After retirement, he spent much of his time with friends, who referred to him as "the shadow", playing poker and golf at Vermilion Hills Country Club, where he was a lifetime member. He also enjoyed repairing bicycles for neighborhood children and later his interest in wood working led him to make decorative items, toy boxes, hope chests, yard statues, and cabinets for his children and grandchildren.

Dick is survived by his two daughters, Karen (Jeff) Gross and Lori (John) Smith, 10 grandchildren, 4 step-grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and sister Judith Vandiver. He was a quiet, loving father and grandfather. He will be missed by many.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, January 13, 2023 at 2:00 pm at Sunset Memorial Park, where he will be reunited with Irene. Please join Dicks family in sharing memories, condolences, and photos on his Tribute Wall at www.sunsetfuneralhome.com
