Rev. Dr. Joe C. Detamore, 84, of Danville, passed away at 3:05 a.m. Friday, May 15, 2009 at Colonial Manor Nursing Home. Joe was born on October 13, 1924 in Shawnee, Oklahoma, the son of Roger and Gertrude (Orr) Detamore. He married Frances Jones in 1946 in Enid, Oklahoma. She preceded him in death on March 13, 2009. Joe later married Marian Jean Hoover on December 18, 1969, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She preceded him in death on July 27, 1997. He is survived by his two sons-Roger Detamore of Bismarck and Dr. Timothy (Tina) Detamore of Clinton, Ohio; two daughters- Lesile (Rob) Tanner of Spring Hill, Florida and Lisa (Herbie) Arroyo of Tampa, Florida; one step- daughter- Kim Davis of Lynchburg, Virginia; close friend- Jesse Shelby of Danville; seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews; and former daughter-in-law- Sharon Detamore of Bismarck. He was preceded in death by his parents, two wives, two brothers- Arthur Detamore and Byrum Detamore. Joe graduated from high school in Oklahoma. After high school he joined the United States Navy and served from 1942 to 1946, serving in Guam during WWII. After returning from the Navy, he attended Phillips University in Enid, Oklahoma, Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas and later Lexington Bible Seminary in Lexington, Kentucky. Joe was a Disciples of Christ minister. Working in Neosha, MO, Arkansas City, KS, London, England, Springfield, MO, Jefferson City, MO, Danville, IL, Oklahoma City, OK, Corpus Christi, Texas, Lynchburg, VA and Charleston, IL, where he retired in 1988, as an interim minister. After retiring, he worked at other various churches where he was needed. He was a member of the Masons for several years, YMCA and Central Christian Church. Joe was an avid reader of theological books. He also loved going to Table Rock Lake to go boating and water skiing. Joe was always focused on work and enjoyed eating a good steak. A Celebration of the Life of Rev. Dr. Joe C. Detamore will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, May 21, 2009 at Central Christian Church in Danville, with Pastors Hank Anderson, Deann Anderson and Drew Mentzer officiating. Visitation will be from 3:00-7:00 p.m. Wednesday at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center. Burial will follow the service on Thursday at Sunset Memorial Park, with military rites conducted by American Legion Post #210.
