Regina Stein, age 92, passed away January 19, 2021. She was born November 16, 1928 in Camaguey, Cuba, the daughter of Max Teichberg and Sara Kagan. She attended local schools in Camaguey and went on to the University of Havana and studied at the College of Pharmacy. After graduation she married her husband of 58 years, Ramon Stein. In 1953 they immigrated to the United States and settled in Chicago. They became naturalized US citizens.
As their young family began to grow, Regina, affectionately known as Gina, decided she wanted her children to grow up in a small town and they found their way to Danville. She raised her five children in Danville. She once said only half joking, that she and Ramon learned English by watching reruns of the I Love Lucy Show on TV. It proved to be a good education. As her children grew up, she volunteered as a Great Books instructor, teaching English literature in Danville public schools. When the kids got a little older, she worked side by side with her husband at the office on Logan Avenue for many years.
Regina was a tough, loving wife and mother and deeply devoted to her family. She had a sharp mind and a big heart. In her later years she developed several hobbies. She was an avid reader and enjoyed word and number games. She became prolific at two hobbies. She put together many intricate and grand jigsaw puzzles. But even more prolific was her production of beaded jewelry. She made it endlessly. She loved to show it off and talk about it. She said she made it to sell, but she seemed to enjoy giving it away.
She was sweet in her old age and she dearly loved all her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. We will miss her. She was predeceased by her husband Ramon and by her daughter, Rose. She is survived by four sons, Milt, Sam, Mike, and Marc and by five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
A Private family graveside will be held in Springhill Cemetery. Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Danville, Illinois, 3940 N Vermilion St. Danville, Illinois 61834 has been entrusted with arrangements.
