Raymond G. Thompson 90 of Oakwood, IL passed away December 29th, 2022 at 2:05 am at OSF Hospital in Danville, IL.
He was born July 19th, 1932 to Everett and Lois Thompson in Oakwood, IL and grew up in the Rabbit Town Area and attended Danville High School.
Raymond G. Thompson married Norma Jean Campbell on January 17th, 1953 in Danville, Il she preceded him in death. He is survived by their 7 children Debra, Randy, Jane (Derek), Jennifer, Julie (Dave), John (Amie), Teresa. Grandchildren Brandi (Gary), LeAnn, Cory (Danielle), Jeff (Christine), Skylar, Taylor (Vicki), Trace (Heidi), Austin (Concha), Cody (Ashlea), Lane, Hayden, Kaleb (Taylor), Cierra, Nicole (Adam), Coltin and Kayla (Corey), 19 Great Grandchildren and 2 on the way. Two Great-Great Grandchildren. Sister Betty (Thompson) Casey of Wyoming, Sister-in-law Ruth (Robert) Harrison of Danville, several nieces and nephews, and special neighbors Mike and Barb Davis.
In April 1950 at the age of 17 Ray enlisted in the Army to serve in the Korean War. After serving 9 years of active-duty he transitioned to the Illinois Army National Guard and served 21 yrs. Ray was a member of the Oakwood Fire Dept for 36yrs, with 27yrs as Chief. Ray joined the Oakwood Police Department in 1971 as a part-time Officer before becoming the first-ever full-time Chief of Police in 1975, serving 23yrs before his retirement in 1994. Ray was also a volunteer with the Oakwood Ambulance from 1973-1993. His, life was centered around his wife, children, grandchildren and The Oakwood Community. He enjoyed going to his grandkids sporting events, and was an avid Cubs and Illini Fan.
He was preceded in death by his Parents, sister Beverly (James) Claypool, brother Donald (Joan) Thompson. In-Laws James and Devorah (Jones) Campbell, Robert (Winiford) Campbell, Harriett (Gorman) Givens, Leona (William) Givens, Juanita Campbell and Lois Campbell, Herbert (Mary Alice) Campbell and Walter (Billy) Campbell.
A Celebration of Life for Raymond will be at 11:00 AM Friday, January 6, 2023 at Sunsets Oakwood Chapel, 105 E. South Main Street Oakwood, IL. Officiating the service will be Patti Wise. Burial will be in the Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 4:00 pm 7:00 pm Thursday, January 5, 2023 at the funeral home in Oakwood.
Memorials may be made to DACC Foundation Norma and Raymond Thompson Scholarship fund.
