Raymond Edward “Ed” Godwin was born on July 15, 1941, in Princeton, Indiana, to Merle L. and Ruth M. Godwin. He graduated from ABL High School in 1959 and proudly served in the United States Air Force. Ed was immensely proud of his military service and was a true patriot who deeply loved his country. He completed his service and left the Air Force in 1963.
On December 22, 1965, Ed married Nancy L. Schawitsch. Together they shared a loving marriage and raised three children: Angela Anderson (Bill) of Westfield, Indiana; Amy Dixon (Dana) of Wellington IL and Andrew Godwin of Wingate.
The lights of Ed’s life were his grandchildren Cassidy, Katie, Jackson, and Styles. He attended countless sporting events, always wearing school colors, and was front and center at every graduation and birthday party. He loved his grandchildren deeply and took great joy in being present for every milestone. Ed also has one great-grandson and another on the way.
Ed was also extremely proud of his children. He never missed a sporting event, band concert, or school birthday party. In recent years, Ed shared that his proudest accomplishment was that all of his children had grown into productive citizens.
Ed retired from Hyster in 2005 after many years of dedicated service. He was an avid reader, a lover of music, and a lifelong student of history, particularly the Civil War and ancient Egypt. If you had a question about music or history, Ed was your guy. He was also the family’s trusted head mechanic and driver education instructor.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Merle and Ruth Godwin, and his sisters, Cathi Godwin and Ruth Anne Bridgewater. He is survived by his wife, Nancy; his children; his grandchildren; and his brother, Dave Godwin.
Ed was the best husband, father, and grandfather we could have asked for. He will be deeply missed.
The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the staff of Williamsport Nursing and Rehab, St. Vincent Williamsport Hospital and the Danville VA Medical Center hospice team for their compassionate care.
