Ray H. Staggs

Kingman, Ind. - Ray H. Staggs, 88, of rural Kingman, passed away at 6:38 p.m. CST Monday, March 2, 2015 at the Veterans Administration Illiana Health Care System in Danville, Illinois. Ray was born October 11, 1926 in Parke County, Indiana, the son of the late Clarence P. and Elizabeth F. Combs Staggs. Ray married Martha Merryman on February 19, 1950 in Cates, Indiana celebrating 65 years of marriage. She survives. Other survivors include one son, James Ray Staggs of rural Kingman, Indiana; one brother, Clarence(Hazel)Staggs, Jr. of Rockville, Indiana and several nieces and nephews. Ray was preceded in by two sisters, Mary Vibbert and Mabel Fortner and two brothers, Randall Staggs and Roy Staggs. Ray retired from the Fountain County Highway Department in 1991 as a heavy equipment operator. Prior to that he and his wife operated a dairy farm outside of Cates, Indiana from 1950 thru 1980. Ray was a veteran of W.W. II serving with the United States Army. While in the Army he spent one year in Tokyo, Japan. He was a member of the D.A.V. Chapter 19 in Elkhart, Indiana and was a member and past commander of the Kingman American Legion Post #384 and Covington V.F.W. #2395. Ray served as Democrat committee precinct chairman since 1971. He was very active with and volunteered his time at the Veterans Administration Illiana Health Care System. Ray enjoyed riding his horses, especially in parades, rug weaving and going to flea markets. Funeral services: 12:30 p.m. EST Friday, March 6, 2015 at DeVerter Funeral Home in Cayuga, Indiana; Officiating: Keith Warner; Burial: Danville National Cemetery with military rites by the Kingman American Legion Post 384 and Covington V.F.W. #2395; Visitation: 10:30 a.m. EST Friday, March 6, 2015 until time of services.
