Ralph Paul West

Ralph Paul West, age 100, of Newport, IN, passed away at 10:27am, Monday, August 7, 2023, at Gibson Center for Hospice, Terre Haute, IN. He was born the son of Ralph and Flossie {Formen} West in Newport, IN, on December 24, 1922. He was united in marriage to Ruth Craft on August 16, 1946. They would have celebrated their 77th wedding anniversary together. She will miss him. He is also survived by his children, Dean (Loretta) West and Randy (Cathy) West; his grandchildren, Kristy Roberts, Brett Harrison, Misty Loy, Terri Maxwell, Dustin West, April Cockrum, Rachel West, Brandi Sager, and Jordan West; his 10 great grandchildren; and his 4 great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Linda Harrison; his granddaughter, Andrea Roberts; two brothers, Wayne West and Leiton West; and his sister, Mary Callahan. Paul graduated from Newport High School. He served in the US Army during WWII from 1943 -1946 and the Korean War from 1951-1953. He went into the Reserves and served 23 years. He worked for Teepak for 27 years in Danville, IL. In his spare time, he was a beekeeper and gardener. He was known to many as a "jack-of-all-trades" and that he loved the town of Newport and its people. He especially enjoyed visiting with visitors who came to the annual Hillclimb. He will be missed by many. A celebration of Pauls life will be held at 1:00pm (EST), Thursday, August 10, 2023, at Sunset Funeral Home & Cremation Center, DeVerter Chapel, 215 N. Division Street, Cayuga, IN 47928 with John Hawkins officiating. Visitation will be held 11:00am to 1:00pm (EST) on Thursday prior to his service at the funeral home. He will be laid to rest in Thomas Cemetery, Newport. Memorial donations may be given in his name to the donors choice of charity.
