Ralph A. Gaines

Newport, Ind. - Ralph A. Gaines, 94, of Newport passed away at 9:32 a.m. EDT Monday, October 8, 2018 at Clinton Gardens in Clinton, Indiana.

He was born April 6, 1924 in Hillsdale, Indiana the son of the late George Brown and Dulcinea Estella (Jett) Gaines.

Ralph married Lois C. Colvin on November 28, 1999 in Newport, Indiana. She survives.

Other survivors include his children: Carolyn (Jim) Lindley of Dana, Indiana and Mary (Chris) Busch of Plainfield, Indiana; step son: Vince J. (Stephanie) Hilliard of Fredericksburg, Virginia; three grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Ralph was preceded in death by three brothers.

A carpenter by trade, Ralph formerly worked at the Danville Illiana Health Care System. He was also a security guard at the former Newport Army Ammunition Plant. Ralph was a veteran of World War II serving in the United States Army, receiving a Bronze Star. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing and was a member of the N.R.A. Ralph was known in the Newport area for teaching young people how to handle and shoot a gun.

Graveside services and burial: 1 p.m. EDT Thursday, October 11, 2018 at Highland Cemetery in Hillsdale, Indiana; Officiating: Jim Lindley. There will be no visitation.
