Phillip Cappello

Phillip Cappello, 85, of Home Gardens, passed away Wednesday July 22, 2026, at Pleasant Meadows Senior Living in Chrisman, Illinois with family by his side. Phil was born June 1, 1941, in Danville, Illinois, the son of Hugh and Mildred (Lenfant) Cappello. He married Linda Kielich on December 27, 1997, she will deeply miss him.

Phil also leaves behind his daughter Gayle Cappello of Aurora, IL, his brother Bruce Cappello of Westville, IL, his grandchildren: Trinity, Tyler, Tori, Abby, and Josalyn, seven great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews; Jason, Stacy, Marlee, Kaylee, Doug and David.

Phil was preceded in death by his parents, his son Kenton Cappello, one sister Delores Steele, and a niece Dawn Steele.

Phil and Linda enjoyed mushroom hunting, being in the outdoors, daily car rides on area country roads counting the deer they saw. They also enjoyed flea markets, walking old cemeteries and all things involving coal mines and the history of Vermilion County. He spent many hours researching local museums, genealogy and courthouse property records.

Employers included Bohn, Kedas & company, and Thomas Excavating. He retired at age 79.

A Celebration of Phil’s life will be held at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation center’s Urbas Chapel 414 South State Street Westville, Illinois, on Wednesday July 29, 2026, at 2pm. Burial to follow at Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 12-2 prior to the service.
