Peter E. Hanson Jr.

Peter E. Hanson Jr., "Petey", left this earth Thursday, February 10, 2022, to join his beloved father, Peter E. Hanson Sr., Uncle Dean R. Benson (whom he has missed bantering with daily), Aunt Hilda Qualey, as well as his grandparents, Peter and Alma, for endless cookouts and peaceful walks along the sandy beaches with the calming crashes of Heavens waves. Pete was a local man to Covington, IN where he learned the best of hunting, both mushrooms and deer alike, fishing, and small-town living. He tended a small farm on the outskirts of Kingman with his father growing up, developing a work ethic that didnt shy of backbreaking labor. He continuously worked to broaden his skillsets beyond his career as a crankshaft die supervisor, becoming proficient in roofing, construction, cleaning, and landscaping. He found his ultimate adventures though, through a lifetime of travel, from short trips across the state to long journeys across the world. Pete explored the best of the West with his father, every amusement park he could find for his kids, charter boats full of salmon, Mickey Mouse, a haunted house, East Coast, West Coast, water skiing, and sight seeing. But of the tales he tells, Eastern Europe and Hawaii were among his greatest hits. And boy could he tell a story, whether it was about his days spent running bases with his buddies in softball tournaments, coaching little league and Saturdays at the soccer fields (who remembers Petes Game?), or his youthful days volunteering his time as a firefighter and police reserve. Pete was the first to get a laugh and the last to get a word. But no matter what, he was always willing to give you the shirt off his back; just beware, it may be a shirt proudly displaying his love for the Bears, Cubs, or even those IU Hoosiers. Any faults he may have {unadmittedly} had, not including his choice in sports teams, were overshadowed by his green thumb and his servants heart. He found no greater pride than in his family, except maybe his and half the towns lawns that he poured his heart into tending through his {faux} retirement. He spread his love like grass seed, literally. Pete had a passion for weedless lawns and big, beautiful flowers that he joyfully shared with those he cared for the most. But if it wasnt lawns he was helping with, it was home improvements, backyard projects, moving day, a long talk, or just a smiling face to give you a hard time. Pete worked hard but loved that much harder and lived in practice of Matthew 22:37-39. His legacy will be his selfless acts of service, the intricate details we didnt know we needed to maintain a healthy yard, the importance of making every project square, and giving grace when things dont turn out as intended. Pete will be remembered and missed by his cat Whisper, his aunt, Marlene Benson, his children, Misti Hanson, Josh & Bobbi Smith, Chad & Jessica Hanson, Ashli & Jason Smiley, and Mandi Hanson & Ryan Myer, grandchildren Sydni Hanson & Byron Cottrell, Madison & Ben Kuhn, Kaylee Brazelton, Taylar Hanson & Patrick Yeich, Lidia Hanson, Jaylen Adams & Breanna Counce, Luke Hanson, Tyson Smith, and Magnolia, great grandchildren Khloe, Kalayah, Nehlani, Kylan, and Sloan, so many grand-pets, several cousins of the Benson, Curry, Lomax, Schull, and Qualey families, and too many friends to list. Pete cared for his father until he passed in 1989. His father was a World War II Veteran who was injured in the line of duty, leaving him paralyzed. Whereas, his fathers disability had its challenges, it did not define him and he went on to live a full, successful life. Pete was aware that not all veterans with disabilities are forwarded the same support his father had and was dedicated to doing a small part in helping these men, women, and their families through donations to the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Charity. In Petes honor, the family is requesting that we continue this support that he held so close to his heart. In lieu of flowers, please consider sending donations on behalf of the Hanson Family to DAV. A celebration of Petes life will be held at 2:00pm (EST), Monday, February 21, 2022, at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Covington, Indiana 420 3rd St. Covington, Indiana 47932 with Pastor Joe Humrichous officiating. Visitation will be 11:00am to 2:00pm (EST) on Monday prior to his service at the funeral home. He will be laid to rest in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Covington. Please join his family in sharing memories, photos, & videos through his Tribute Wall at www.sunsetfuneralhome.com.
