Peggy Royster Pierce was a lifelong resident of Vermilion County. She was born on February 10, 1950, and was the daughter of the late Jack Jenkins Royster and Annabelle Royster. She is survived by her beloved sons Joshua William Pierce (Kathleen) and Jesse Parker Pierce, her sister Jeane Plumart, brother Jack Jay Royster, grandson Jackson Crawford Pierce, and an extraordinary community of extended family and dear friends.
Peggy was a lover of nature, poetry, music, and drama. She enjoyed walking in the woods, sitting on her porch watching the birds and squirrels that she fed, and tending to the trees, rocks, flowers, and plants in her garden.
Peggy was a dedicated and inspirational educator. A former student shared that "she was truly one in a million and has made a massive positive impact on so many young lives in Danville for generations". Peggy began teaching at Liberty Elementary School in 1977, then moved to East Park Middle School. She retired from North Ridge Middle School in 2010. During her 33 years as a teacher, she introduced students to poetry, creative writing, and the importance of self-discovery and showing kindness to others. She taught language arts and directed school plays as the Drama Club Director. She was gifted in her ability to help students find their passions, believe in themselves, make their voices heard, and follow their hearts. She encouraged them and motivated them to be their best selves. It made her day to hear from former students, sharing that "they shed light on my life and lift me up".
Peggy was deeply concerned about all members of the community. She was a warrior for social justice, including equality and empowerment. She never tired of championing the rights of marginalized groups including women, minorities, people with disabilities, and the LGBTQIA+ community. She was never afraid to share her passions and inspired others to do so as well.
Peg was an amazing mother and grandmother, and a kind and generous sister. She possessed a beautiful spirit of friendship, and all who knew her will miss her humor and empathy. Her sons and grandson were her heart and joy. She wrote of her sons, "they prove to me that every minute is a miracle". Thank you for showing us the way of love. Your light will shine in our hearts forever.
