Peggy Jo Fortner

Newport, Ind. - Peggy Jo Fortner, 70, of Newport, passed away at 8:37 a.m. EST Saturday, March 5, 2022 at Union Hospital in Terre Haute, Indiana.

She was born July 1, 1951 in Clinton, Indiana the daughter of the late Ray and Lilly Juanita (Little) Griffin.

Peggy first married Herman W. Cronk. She later married Dan K. Fortner on November 7, 1986 in Newport, Indiana. He survives.

Other survivors include her daughter: Jackie Jo Cronk of Newport, Indiana; two stepdaughters: Sheila (Theo) Keller of Newport, Indiana and Jill Fortner of Fishers, Indiana; six grandchildren: Glenn, Willie, Rebecca, Andrea, Conner and Audrey; ten great grandchildren: Gabriel, Grant, Charlotte, Gunner, Finley, Noah, Brayden, Lillian, Clayton and Lenny; three sisters: Judy Stockton of Greencastle, Indiana; Connie (John) Doan of Rockville, Indiana and Becky (Kurt) Kinderman of Cayuga, Indiana; five brothers: Dennis (Juanita) Griffin of Mecca, Indiana; Terry (Tammy) Griffin of Montezuma, Indiana; Roger (Ruthie) Griffin of Rockville, Indiana; Dan (Rada) Griffin of Newport, Indiana and Randy (Leigh Ann) Griffin of Hillsdale, along with several nieces and nephews.

Peggy was preceded in death by her granddaughter: Brittany; great granddaughter: Grace Marie; sister: Patty, and five brothers: Henry, Virgil, Billy, Tony and Tim.

Peggy formerly worked at Union Hospital as a manager for Safety, Security and Workman's Comp, retiring in 2000. She later started PJ's Dog Grooming in Newport. Peggy was a 1969 graduate of Montezuma High School. She enjoyed gardening, dog grooming, watching basketball, fast pitch softball (Formerly played) and spending time with her grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life gathering will be held on Sunday, March 13, 2022 from 2 to 5 p.m. EST at the Newport Lions Club House. DeVerter Funeral Home in Cayuga, Indiana is assisting the family with arrangements.
