Covington- Paul Gene Powell, 83, of Covington, IN, died peacefully with his loved ones beside him at 3:30 PM on Thursday, March 25. He was born on July 16, 1926, in rural Danville to Isaac and Millie Marrow Powell. He married Betty May Mertz on October 25, 1947, in Paris, IL. She survives. Also surviving is one daughter Donna J. Powell; three sons Ronald G., Matthew G., and Mitchell T. Powell; two sisters Beveline Danner and Mary June Kochell; one brother Delmer Powell; and 10 grandchildren Victoria, Beverly, Bethany, Russell, Sean, Caleb, Michael, Kristen, Jessica, and Devon. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Richard Dean Powell, daughter Alice Jeannette Carlson, and a grandson, Pascal Christi(c)n Siniora. Gene served his country by enlisting in the U.S. Army, captaining a tugboat in Manila Bay in the Philippines. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying activities such as hunting, fishing, making muzzle loading rifles, and even became an accomplished archer at the age of 65. Gene also loved gardening and was famous for his tomatoes. Funeral services to honor Genes life will be held at 1:00 PM Central Time on Tuesday, March 30, 2010, at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Danville, IL. Visitation will be held from 2-4 PM Central Time on Sunday, March 28, 2010. He will be buried at Bethel Cemetery, rural Danville, IL, where he will be surrounded by generations of family and friends.
