Paul Oden Engle, 86, died at 6:20 pm, Thursday, June 28, 2007, at Provena Covenant Rehabilitation Center in Champaign, Illinois. Paul was born on March 12, 1921, in Teutopolis, Illinois, to George and Mary (Krieg) Engle. He married Mary Louise Zehner on June 7, 1947 in Effingham, Illinois. She survives, along with their five children: Dianne (C. William) Parker, Marilyn Engle, Paul F. Engle, Teresa Engle (special friend David Shaft), and John (Michelle) Engle; eight grandchildren: Michele (Timothy) Turner, Daniel (Gretchen) Parker, Matthew Parker, Jennifer Lowery, Ryan (Dorothy) Lowery, Sara Engle (Fianc(c) Brian Schull), Laura Engle, and Kathryn Engle; two great-grandchildren: Aaron Turner and Molly Parker. The youngest of ten children, Paul was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Edna Sly, Alice Tallman, Louise Hill, Agnes Engle, and Frances Smith; brothers Frank, William, Victor, and George, a granddaughter, Elizabeth Lowery; special sister-in-law Eleanor Hewing Engle; and lifelong friend and brother-in-law James Kenter. Paul was a veteran of the United States Army, aquiring the rank of Captain and serving in both WWII and Korea receiving a Silver Star and a Purple Heart. A printer by trade, he owned and operated Heart Printing Company in Effingham until his Army Reserve unity was called to active duty during the Korean Conflict. Paul was retired from Recording and Statistical Corporation, and had owned and operated the Mister Softee franchise in Danville from 1961 to 1969. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Knight of Columbus, and had served on the board of Holy Family Credit Union for several years. Paul enjoyed gardening, crossword puzzles, and was a dedicated fan of Illini basketball and the Chicago Cubs since the age of 11. He supported Catholic education and had been an active member of the original Schlarman High School Foundation drive. Pauls favorite times were spent with his wife and family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. A Celebration of Pauls Life will be held at 10:30 am Monday, July 2, 2007 at Holy Family Catholic Church 444 East Main Street, Danville with Rev. Ted Pracz officiating. Visitation will be held from 2-6 pm Sunday at Sunset Funeral Home & Cremation Center. 3940 N. Vermilion St. Danville, IL. He will be laid to rest at the Resurrection Mausoleum in Danville.
