Patricia "Patty" Ann (George) Grider went to be with her husband Kenneth on February 7, 2017 at 6:49AM at her home in Danville, Illinois with her loving family and devoted friend by her side. Pat was born to Charles Weekly Jr. and Betty Bernice George November 14, 1923 in Danville, Illinois, where she lived most of her life. She had a younger brother Leo "Buddy," who died as an infant. Pat graduated from Danville High School, and went on to get a Registered Nursing Degree from Illinois Wesleyan University and also from The Lakeview College of Nursing in 1944. She served in the United States Navy as a nurse in Berkeley, California. She worked for over 25 years at the Danville VA Hospital, where she met the love of her life, Kenneth Ralph Grider. They were married over 60 years. They were parents to Cynthia (Cyndee) Ann Grider Davis and Timothy Leo Grider. After leaving the VA, Pat was involved with visiting nurse services, drug counseling and mental health work. She was loved by her patients and co-workers alike. Pat and Ken were active in the Elks Lodge and the Masonic Lodge. She was a Girl Scout leader for Cyndee's troop, and was also a fierce ally who supported both children in their school, extracurricular activities and diverse life choices. Pat enjoyed handicrafts, cooking, storytelling, magic and was an expert at growing African Violets as well as Calligraphy. She was an accomplished musician who played both the marimba and flute and worked for a brief period singing radio jingles for local stations. Her King George Marimba was her most cherished instrument. She collected Native American memorabilia, keychains, dolls, statuary and neighborhood kids who called her their second Mother. Patricia served her country proudly in the United States Navy as a Nurse during World War II, and was a Godly woman who attended the Churches of Christ, Methodist and other denominations in the Danville area. The Griders took family vacations yearly, and also enjoyed camping. Pat was an excellent cook and loved morel mushrooms. The Griders enjoyed eating at a local truck stop, where the wait staff called them "Ken and Barbie." Pat loved her many cats and dogs. She was a loving and nurturing mother, and a good friend to all who knew her. Her legacy grows with each historical tale told. She will be greatly missed by her family, friends and felines. Pat was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth R Grider. She is survived by her daughter Cyndee Ann Grider Davis (Gene), her son Timothy Leo Grider (Shane,) grandchildren Adam Davis (Stephanie), Kelly Davis Lenhart (Cody), and Jette Grider, as well as numerous great and great-great grandchildren. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m., Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at the Sunset Funeral Home, 3940 N. Vermilion Street Danville, IL and funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 16, 2017 at the funeral home. Graveside services at Oakridge Cemetery in Catlin to follow the funeral service on Thursday. Memorials may be made to the animal shelter, C.A.R.A. located at 609 E. 5th Street Tilton, IL.
