Oswald G. Hensrud, 88, of Danville passed away on August 14, 2009 at Illiana Health Care Systems in Danville. Oswald was born May 1, 1921 in La Crosse, WI son of Oscar and Gina (Erickson) Hensrud. He is survived by sister: Frances Burton of Costa Mesa, CA; nieces: Heidi (Steve) Tucker of Danville and Gina Coye of CO; nephew: James Burton Jr. of Lancaster, CA; great-nephews: Bryce and Matthew Tucker; and great-niece: Olivia Tucker. He was preceded in death by his parents and Brother Robert. Oswald was a 40 graduate of La Crosse Central High School and had worked for the Danville VA Hospital for 34 years as a supervisor of inventory specialist. Before starting his career he served in the U.S. Army during WWII and Korean War, trained as a sharpshooter, intelligence, ground observer, teletype operator, and a medical technician. During his time in the military he achieved the rank of Sergeant and many medals and awards, including: Victory Medal, American Theater Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with 1 Silver Battle Star, 3 Overseas Service Bars, 1 Service Stripe, 3 Good Conduct Medal, and Belgian Fourragere from the Battle of the Bulge. His commanding officer awarded him in writing During this period, his eagerness to promote perfection and efficiency within this unit has been unsurpassed Oswald was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Danville for a number of years, and also, The American Legion and the Korean War Veterans. Oswald loved to spend time with his friends and family. His great niece and nephews meant the world to him. He is now in the arms of his beloved brother and best friend embracing him into Heaven. He will be sadly missed by his niece Heidi, who loved him dearly and cherished all the time that they had together. A Celebration of Oswalds Life will be held at 1:00 pm, Tuesday, August 18, 2009 at Danville National Cemetery with Pastor Kent Tibben officiating. Sunset Funeral Home & Cremation Center will be in charge of the arrangements. Following the service, he will be laid to rest at Danville National Cemetery with military honors preformed by the Korean War Veterans.
