Oscar Michael 'Mike' Mcclain

Oscar Michael "Mike" McClain, age 69, of Danville, passed away at 10:40am Friday, December 7, 2018 at Carle Hospital.

He was born January 7, 1949 in Danville, Illinois, son of Oscar Elza and Kathryn Ann (Hazel) McClain, both of whom preceded him in death.

He was previously married to Janice Tabor and Audrey Ries, both of whom survive. He had a daughter with Jan, Bonnie Adel Walters of California who also survives, along with his life-time partner Randy Thompson. Mike has two sisters, Mollie Jean Bogart and Nancy Kay (Rick) Harper, both of Danville. He has three nieces, Nicole "Nikki" Ann Bogart, Kelly (Billy) Loewenstein and Holly (Justin) Duprey.

After graduating from DHS in 1967 he spent two tours in the U.S. Navy, first from 1967-1971, then 1972-1974. He was a Vietnam vet, serving on the U.S.S. Benjamin Stoddart DDG22, home-ported at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii and then toured with the CBs in Adak, Alaska and Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean. He received various medals, most notable the Vietnam Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Expendential Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He enjoyed his time in the Navy and travelling across the South Pacific Islands. Mike taught school in Danville for 27 years, teaching at Northeast Elementary, South View Middle School, Douglas Elementary and finishing at East Park Elementary where he taught 4th, 5th, and 6th grades. He also taught GED classes at Laura Lee and Danville Junior College for several years. Mike loved teaching and enjoyed seeing them grow up and become successful. He received "Whos Who of American Teachers" twice.

Services will be held at Sunset Funeral Home 3940 N. Vermilion, Danville on December 12, 2018 at 11am with visitation from 9am to 11am before the service.
