Orville Herbert Wooden

Champaign - Orville Herbert "Herb" Wooden, 69, passed away on November 9, 2017, at Palm Terrace of Mattoon, Mattoon, Illinois. He was the husband of Bonnie Ducey Wooden. They were married on August 30, 1969, at Holy Cross Church in Champaign and shared 48 years of marriage together. Born in Niles, Michigan, he was the son of Lewis Wooden and Julia Davis Wooden. He attended Armstrong High School. He and Bonnie met while working at Collegiate Cap and Gown. He was retired from Holy Cross School where he worked as head custodian. Everyone knew Mr. Wooden! He enjoyed taking drives with his wife, heckling golfers from his back porch, watching Illini basketball, military history and reenactment, gun collecting and hunting. He played slow pitch softball for many years and coached girls' softball thru the Champaign Park District. He loved being "Papa" to his grandchildren. He taught gun hunter safety classes for over 20 years and was a Boy Scout Leader for many years. He never met a stranger, and more times than I can count, would run into someone he knew, or knew of, while vacationing in another state! Herb is survived by his wife, Bonnie; daughter, Darci Edmonson (Matthew); granddaughter Ryley Morfey; grandson Conner Morfey; sister Mary Perry of Urbana; brother Ray Wooden (Linda); nieces Jennifer Livengood (Jake) of Massachusetts; Angela Jarvis (Greg) of Arizona; Nancy Rachel (Frank) of Oklahoma; Samantha Ducey (Brad Ledbedder); nephew, Nathaniel Ducey (Carmen Terra). He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Lewis Wooden, Jr. Thank you to the special people at Palm Terrace where Herb lived for three years. He had many good friends who both lived and worked there and enjoyed many laughs and good times. In honor of Herb's wishes, there will be no visitation and a family memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, the family requests that donations in Herb's name be made to Palm Terrace of Mattoon, 1000 Palm Terrace Ave., Mattoon, Illinois. Please join his family in sharing memories, photos, and videos on his tribute wall at www.sunsetfuneralhome.com.
