Opal Sheetinger

Danville- Opal Louise Sheetinger, 89, of Danville, went to be with the Lord on May 30th, 2013. She was born on March 10th, 1924 in Greenville, SC, the daughter of Buren and Bussie Mae Long. Opal graduated from Lauren's High School, Laurens, SC, returing to Greenville shortly afterwards. She married Dan Sheetinger of Danville, IL on August 26th, 1944 in Greenville, SC while he was stationed at Greenville Air Force Base. At the end of World War II, they moved to Troy, OH for a short time before finding a permanent home in Danville, IL. Opal worked for Illinois Bell as an operator for several years. After attending Danville Beauty School, Mrs. Sheetinger owned and operated a beauty shop, located in her home, for 14 years. She closed her shop and began working as a switchboard receptionist at Heat Craft, retiring after 13 years of service. She was Past President of Danville Hairdresser's Association and Past President of Danville Business and Professional Women's Club. Opal enjoyed volunteering at Provena United Samaritans Medical Center, playing cards with friends, and was a 50 year member of the First United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School for 14 years and later transferred her membership to Batestown United Methodist Church. She dearly loved her family and doted on all of them. Her husband, Dan, parents Buren and Gussie Mae Long, brothers Tony and Bruce Long, and sister Armenia Walker all preceded her in death. Those surviving Opal are her son Dan (Carolyn) Sheetinger, Jr., of Montrose, CO; daughters Sharon Oakwood of Danville; her four grandchildren, Dust Oakwood of Orlando, FL, Cody (Shauna) Oakwood of Danville, Kelli Oakwood of New York, NY, and Kristin (Kevin) Leydon of Commerce City, CO; three great-grandchildren, Lukas Oakwood, Kyle and Kaylin Leydon, and a very special niece, Sandra (Dan) Keeler of Greenville, SC. A service to celebrate the life of Opal Sheetinger will be held at 10 AM on Wednesday, June 5, 2013 at Batestown United Methodist Church in Danville. Pastor Patti Wise will officiate. Burial will follow at Spring Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5-7 PM on Tuesday, June 4 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, A Life Celebration Home in Danville. Memorials may be made to Batestown United Methodist Church, American Cancer Society, or American Lung Association.
