Mylon Cowell Obituary

The Lord called Mylon Cowell, 77, of Westville, home on Thursday February 6, 2020.  He was born in Albin, IL on January 21, 1943, the son of Jesse “Vern” and Virginia (Hocking) Cowell. Both parents preceded him in death.

On November 6, 1971 Mylon married Loretta (Betkis) Cowell, who survives him. Mylon also leaves behind three siblings, Myron (Betty) Cowell of Tucson, AZ, Karen Price of Danville, IL and Joanne (Gary) Gondry of Westville, IL; his six children and their families, Keith (Lisa) Cowell of Guam, USA and their children, Devin, Grant, and Kindle, Matt (Erica) Cowell of Morris, IL and their children, Griffyn, Gwynn, and Myles, Eric Cowell of Peoria, IL, Lynette (J.J.) Evans of Tilton, IL and their children, Teddy and Anna, Doug (Megan) Cowell of Normal, IL and their child Kinsley, Carol (Tim) Poletti of Troy, IL and their children, Brenden and Emilie.

Mylon attended Wingard Grade School and Georgetown High School in Georgetown, IL. He further pursued his education at Lincoln Christian College, University of Hawaii, and Milligan College.

He was a proud Marine Veteran and served 2 tours in Vietnam, while receiving the Navy Achievement Medal. He was also very active in the VFW and was their Chaplin in Danville, IL. He worked as a Westville and Georgetown Police Officer, Corrections Counselor at Pontiac Correctional Center (20 years), Sales Associate in the Garden Centers of both Walmart and Lowe’s in Danville and was a Park Ranger at Forest Glen County Preserve in Westville.

Mylon also served as a youth minister while stationed in Hawaii, and he was very active at his church Morey Chapel in Westville, IL. His hobbies were gardening, camping, videography, storytelling, auctions, being a history buff, and playing Santa Claus at Christmas.

Mylon was a very genuine person and many of his friends called him “Smilin” Mylon. He had a true servant’s heart, was a loving and faithful husband, and a devoted, caring, and proud father and grandfather. His passion for gardening was a true reflection of his caring and nurturing nature, which he exemplified in his life. Playing Santa Claus was a true testament of his giving heart.
