Michael Stump Obituary

Michael Richard Stump stepped out of this world and into the arms of Jesus at home on November 2, 2023 with his wife, Shozet and daughter, Sarah, by his side.  He was born on March 9, 1953 to Richard R. Stump and Vona “Nancy” (Foster) Allen in Williamsport, In.  They preceded him in death.  He attended Covington High School, graduating in 1971. He then attended Wabash College and Indiana State University for a short time until he decided to chase his lifelong dream of being a farmer. This he did for most of his life until he retired in 2015  Even before Spring came, he started getting the itch to get into the field. That itch continued even after he retired. He was also a Commodities Broker for over 25 years.  He had many “adventures” throughout his life, but the one that gave him the most pride was building a car wash in Covington.

Mike had a great love for football…playing, coaching and spectating. He also loved to fish in his spare time.  Some of his most memorable times were going on fishing trips to Canada with his former football coach and good friend, Jack Hunter. He enjoyed spending time with his many friends and family, especially his seven beautiful grandchildren. His personality as an extrovert was exhibited during what could be described as his happiest moments when he was visiting with friends and family.

He met his wife, Shozet (Keller) Stump while dining at Maple Corner Restaurant in Covington, IN where she was working.  They married on August 19, 2006 and together they bought the very restaurant where they met. They owned and operated it for 11 years.

He is survived by his wife, Shozet of Covington, IN; first wife and mother of his children, Beth (Nash) Stump of Avon, IN, son David (Sophie) Stump of Ostrander, OH, daughters Sarah (Kevin) Hendricks of Indianapolis, IN and Rachel (Ryan) Brown of Vestavia, AL , stepson, Antoine Francis of Louisville, KY, sisters-in-law Nancy Stump of Williamsport, IN and Valerie (Dale) White of Covington, IN, mother-in-law Dolores Keller (husband Mike Allen) of Covington, IN, a very close cousin (brother by another mother), Mike Foster of LaGrulla, TX and many more family members .  He is also survived by the loves of his life, his grandchildren: Max, George, Oliver, Layla, Nolan, Evelyn and Nathaniel. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Greg Stump, George “Pat” Stump and Coyle Lewsader.

Mike considered himself blessed to have so many special friends and family members throughout his life. He was always willing to help any of them out and they did the same for him. Two of those friends go back to the 8th grade when Mike first moved to Covington. Rich Rennick and Dan Martin were the first two to reach out to him and accept him as a friend. That friendship remained strong throughout his life until he took his last breath.

As per Mike’s wishes, he will be cremated followed by a private gathering. He and his family entrusted Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Covington, Indiana to help them.  A celebration of life will be held in the Spring.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be considered to the Covington Community Foundation, ATTN: Covington Community Fund, P.O. Box 175, Covington, IN 47932.  Donations may also be made online @: www.wicf-inc.org.
