Michael Malan Obituary

Michael G. Malan, 65, of Danville passed away at his home on September 5, 2021. He was born in Danville a son of Glenwood and Barbara Malan on November 7, 1955. They preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by ex-wife, Jerri Arnold, whom he shared a daughter with.
Mike is survived by his daughter Michelle (Quent) Meeker of Danville, grandchildren Austin (Ross) Darby and Leighton Meeker, and great-granddaughters Remington (whom he affectionately called “Little Turtle”) and Lyla Darby. His siblings Marty (Sandy) Malan, Mark (Lisa) Malan, Dana (Archie) Nixon, and Rene (Maggio- predeceased) Blessent also survive him.
Mike held the position of custodian of Danville School District No. 118 for some time before beginning his own tree trimming business. He then went on to help manage his family’s Big Rock Mobile Home Court.
Mike’s love for sports was wide ranged. His love for playing softball, basketball, and bowling continued into adulthood where he spent many hours refereeing games and coaching basketball at the Y. He had a passion for mentoring and working with the kids at the Y during his time there. Though he loved to watch the Cardinals, Illini, and Packers play, he enjoyed being on the sidelines watching his grandkids play most of all. He also enjoyed mushroom hunting when the weather was right and was known for being a pretty good fisherman, particularly catfish. He and his buddies could be found in a local bar on karaoke night and if you asked Mike, he was pretty good at that too.
Mike had a special place in his heart for animals. Not only did he support and contribute to the Humane Society quite often, but he also took care of the local strays in his community- all who will miss the regular feedings and attention dearly. He is reunited in death with his loyal companions Petey Punkin and Beagus the Beagle.
A Celebration of Mike’s life will be held at a later date. Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Danville, Illinois, 3940 N Vermilion St. Danville, Illinois 61834 assisted his family with arrangements.
