Maryann Mercer Obituary

Maryann Mercer, 75, passed away on Monday, June 6, 2022. She was at home with family by her side. Maryann was born in Harvey, IL on December 17, 1946, the daughter of Elmer and Margaret Woike. She grew up in Blue Island, IL, graduated from Eisenhower High School, and attended Illinois State University.

Anyone who knew Maryann would describe her as a caring and dedicated friend. She loved helping others however she could whether it be a shoulder to lean on or a batch of cookies or shortbread. She was a volunteer at the library’s FriendShop and an ESL tutor.

Maryann was a lifelong lover of the arts – books, movies, music, and theatre. Her career was in banking though her favorite job before retirement was at Barnes & Noble. Recommending books (especially mysteries) and supporting writers was one of her greatest passions. She was an avid sports fan (Chicago Cubs and Bears, New Orleans Saints, Portland Timbers and Thorns, and anything Illini). She also loved puzzles, games, and could answer questions on Jeopardy faster than the contestants.

Maryann is survived by her daughter Catherine (Kenneth) Craglow of Portland, OR and her sister Roberta (Kenneth) Burmeister of Mokena, IL. She is preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 52 years, Charles.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, June 25, 2022 at 11:30 am at the IHotel in Champaign, IL. Memorial donations may be made in her name to the Champaign County Humane Society.
