John Warren Greene Sr.

John Warren Greene Sr., 91, of Danville passed away at 1:20pm Tuesday, November 19, 2019 at Hawthorn Inn. He was born in Terre Haute, IN the son of Harley A. and Minnia Greene. On July 3, 1948 John married the love of his life Ellen Marie Watson and they spent over 57 years together before her passing in 2005. Their mutual endless devotion and love was an inspiration to all who knew them.

John is survived by his daughters, Sue (Jack) Hardy of Lafayette, IN, Janie (Larry) Kuchefski of Danville; one son, John W. (Nedra) Greene of Belleair Beach, FL; thirteen grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; brother, Paul K. Greene; sister, Virginia Walsh and very special friend, Ann Shelton.

He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, Ellen Marie; brothers, James Greene, Harley Greene Jr. and sister, Helen Turner. 

John graduated from Danville High School and was a member of St. James United Methodist Church. He retired at age 52 from Greene Oil Co. where he co-owned the business for over 30 years. John sang in the Barbershop Group the Covingtones. He also enjoyed watching the Cubs and Bears. John and his wife Ellen were avid walkers for over 25 years and loved driving through the country in the fall to see the leaves. John dearly loved his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

A celebration of John’s life will be held at 1pm on Saturday, November 23, 2019 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Danville, Illinois, 3940 N Vermilion St. Danville, Illinois 61834. Officiating will be Reverend Randall Robinson. Visitation will be held from 5pm to 7pm on Friday November 22, 2019 at the funeral home. A private family entombment will take place at Sunset Memorial Park. Memorial donations may be made in John’s name to St. James United Methodist Church.
