G.D. Jones

     G.D. Jones passed away 3 days after his 101st birthday at 5:30 pm October 25th, 2019 at his home in Georgetown, Illinois, with his family by his side. He was born on October 22nd, 1918, in Milltown, Alabama, the son of Lester and Eldora (Foster) Jones.

     He will be dearly missed and survived by his daughter Sabrina (Greg) Hilsheimer and granddaughter Victoria Hilsheimer of Maryville, Tennessee, close friend Bettie Haussy of Georgetown, brother Bob (Jean) Jones of Lanett, Alabama, nieces and nephews, and many other close friends in the Georgetown area.

     G.D. left during grade school to help earn money for his family as a milkman. In his early twenties he moved to Chicago and worked as a machinist helping to build tanks, before enlisting in the army in 1944. He served under General Patton in Central Europe in an artillery unit until 1946. He received a Bronze Star for his achievements during the war.

     After returning from Europe, he married Virginia Smith on July 11th, 1947 in LaGrange, Georgia. They were united in marriage until her passing on April 15th, 2012. G.D. worked on his beloved family farm until for over 40 years until his retirement.

     He has always had an avid interest in classic cars and was a member of an antique car club for years. He also enjoyed animals, taking in stray cats often and feeding the birds every day.

     A brief graveside service for G.D. will be held at 2 pm on Thursday, October 31st, 2019 at Vermilion Grove Cemetery.
