Daniel S. Grinestaff

Daniel Scott Grinestaff, 59, of Danville passed away Monday, May 2, 2022 at OSF hospital. He was born on April 21, 1963 in Danville, IL, the son of George Grinestaff and Katherine (Scarlett) Lee. Daniel is survived by his mother, Katherine Lee; his sister, Jennifer (Colin) Hess; his niece, Victoria Hess; his stepsiblings, Tom Watson, Jr., Larry Lee and Sylvia Lee; and his step-niece, Stephanie (Dominick) Muzio. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his brother, David Grinestaff; father, George Grinestaff; stepfather, Hershall Lee; grandparents Max and Dorothy Scarlett and Larkin and Gladys Grinestaff.

Daniel lived in Brevard, NC for five years during his childhood before returning to Danville and graduating from Danville High School in 1981. He then worked for R & S printing before moving to Rockville, IN, where he lived for 25 years. Daniel eventually returned to Danville again and was working for Courtesy Ford at the time of his passing.

While living in Rockville, Daniel coached youth football for many years (go Lions!) He also participated in Civil War reenactments with his unit, the 14th Indiana Co., appearing in the Colin Farrell movie American Outlaws. Friends and neighbors enjoyed Christmas parties in the three story, 1899 house he restored in Rockville.

Daniel had a great love of cars, especially Mustangs and Cougars. He started restoring Mustangs in high school and his most current project was a 1972 Cougar. Daniel was skilled in historical restoration, working on his own homes and for the State of Indiana on historical buildings. He was also a talented artist, specializing in pencil drawings.

Daniel enjoyed watching baseball, in particular the White Sox and Danville Dans, classic movies and television shows like Cool Hand Luke and The Andy Griffith Show. The mural of the Beatles he painted in his parent’s basement on Kentucky Street was a testament to his favorite band. He also enjoyed traveling to Civil War battlefields, to western and southern states. His favorite place was Wrightsville Beach, NC.

Daniel had many friends and served as a mentor to his football players. His best friend and cousin, Shane, joined him on many adventures throughout his life. He will be missed for his unique sense of humor, knowledge of obscure subjects and observations on life.

A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 7, 2022 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Danville, Illinois, 3940 N Vermilion St. Danville, Illinois 61834. Officiating will be Pastor James Yonkers. Visitation will be held just prior to the service from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
