Oakwood - Norman L. Ponder, Jr., 92, of Oakwood, formerly of Danville, passed away at 4:41 PM on Monday, April 10, 2017 at his home. He was born on October 24, 1924 in Brevard, NC to Norman L. Ponder, Sr. and Mary Elizabeth (Franklin) Ponder. He shared 63 wonderful years with his wife, Lucy F. (Chilion) Ponder. She preceded him in death on February 7, 2008. He is survived by three daughters, Darlene (Roy) Frantz of Coral Springs, FL, Lucy Ann (Neal) Dillon of Aiken, SC, and Susan (Ed) Miller of Oakwood; six grandchildren, Norman (Sandra) Frantz of Coral Springs, FL, Col. Robert (Gail) Dillon of Williamsport, VA; Michael (Nicole) Dillon of Riverside, CA, Melissa Holst of Danville, Dawn (Mike) Pricer of Oakwood, and Emily (Rick) Emery of Farmville, NC; 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, and two grandchildren, Laura Wheeler, and Cpl. Matthew Dillon. Following college, Norman served his country in the United States Navy during WWII. He became a Purchasing Agent and manager at Olin in Covington, IN until his retirement in 1975. He then went on to work another ten years as Purchasing Manager at Bohn in Danville. Norman loved to play golf, but also enjoyed fishing. He was a member of the Danville Elks Club and Ridgeview Baptist Church, later attending Muncie Baptist Church. A service to celebrate the life of Norman L. Ponder, Jr. will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, April 15, 2017 at Muncie Baptist Church. Pastor Dave Garver will officiate. Entombment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Danville. Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Danville has been entrusted with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family to assist in the purchase of a memorial bench.
