Norma June Hackney Zimmerman passed away peacefully and surrounded with love on April 19, 2023 after a long and wonderful life. She was born at home in Homer on March 2, 1935 to parents Marvin O. and Alice Orndoff Hackney. She attended and graduated from Danville High School. In February of 1956, she married the love of her life Raymond Zimmerman. He preceded her in May of 2021. During their 65 happy years of marriage, she and Raymond created a loving and nurturing environment for their family. She was a mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and yes, great-great grandmother.
She is survived by her children Pammy (Jerry Alcorn) Zimmerman and Mark A. (Becky) Zimmerman, Sr. and grandchildren Misty (Rob) Bryant, Todd (Lesley) Smith, Mark A. Zimmerman, Jr., Amber N. (Austin) Hardy, Zachary Zimmerman, and Christa (Troy) Barnes. She also leaves behind her great-grandchildren Alexys (Austin), Eric (Liyah), Daisy (Cody), Jeremiah, Liam, Gavin, Autumn, Zoey, Elijah, Gabrielle (Jaedon), Zion, Angelina, Lola, Sam, Max, Cainan, Bruce, and Natalie; great-great grandchildren Ariah, Alyvia, Amilia, and Luxx; her siblings Charlotte Ann Peddycoart and David Lee (Lory) Hackney; niece Debbie (Kurt) McNair and nephew Marty (Lee) Fellers; and many additional nieces and nephews. She was deeply loved and will be deeply missed.
She devoted her life to her children and all of her many grandchildren and their families. She and her brothers and sisters were raised on a farm where she learned to be strong and self-sufficient, and she imparted those traits to her family. She was in her own words a 'domestic goddess'. She was the family historian and she treasured all the things that her kids and grandkids accomplished. She saved everything they made for her. She was a hard worker and an amazing cook. She was always there for her family, and she will be missed forevermore.
She notably worked at the Wolford Hotel, General Electric, and then at Illinois Fireworks for many years. She began working at Quaker Oats until she and Raymond moved to South Carolina in 1977. They lived in South Carolina for nearly 20 years and made many lifelong friendships while there, including good friends Melvina and Leonard Brazier. She will be missed by her dear friend Bobby Stovall as well.
In their earlier years, Norma and Raymond enjoyed bowling together. When she wasnt outside tending to her garden or mowing, she could be found inside enjoying the Game Show Network with a crossword or wordsearch nearby. She most recently attended Morey Chapel of Christ when able.
Along with her parents and husband, Norma was preceded in death by her stillborn son in 1958 Timothy Ray Zimmerman; siblings Marjorie (Tom) Elston, Harley Wayne Hackney, Doris Jean (Harold) Howie, and Wanda (Cliff) Westfall; brother-in-law Bob Bland; and her wonderful friends Rose and Don Harris.
