Norma J. Butts

Norma Jean Beasley Butts, age 92, passed away peacefully on Nov. 7th, 2025. Born on December 15, 1932, she was the cherished daughter of Edward Beasley and Margaret Helen (Murray) Beasley. She was one of seven children, 3 boys and 4 girls.

Norma married Shelby H. Butts on October 13, 1951. Together, they raised nine children: Larry, Greg, Karen Sue, Maurice, Brenda, Shelby Jr., Sheila, Darryl, and Teresa. Norma often said she had “two families” -five children in the first group and four in the second, with a six-year gap between them and a 19-year span overall. They were married for 59 years before Shelby died at age 79.

As a military wife, Norma moved frequently with Shelby, who served in the United States Air Force, relocating every few years. She stayed home with her children until 1971, when she learned to drive and began working outside the home. Norma held various jobs and retired in 1987. After retirement, she lovingly babysat many of her grandchildren. Norma had a special love for babies and was happiest when surrounded by them.

Norma was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Shelby (2010), and two sons: Larry (1993) and Maurice (2008). She is also preceded in death by all of her brothers and sisters.

She leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion through her surviving children, 21 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great-grandchildren. Norma will be remembered for her strength, warmth, and unwavering dedication to her family.

Norma will be laid to rest at Danville National Cemetery on Monday, November 17, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center’s Champaign Chapel, 710 N. Neil St., Champaign, IL 61820, is honored to be assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
